Potty Training, I Love You and Hate You

In Uncategorized on December 13, 2011 at 9:50 pm

I feel the need to put all of my feelings about potty training out there.  I feel bad for my Facebook friends… almost every other post over the past two weeks has been about potty training.  So in an effort to spare you the daily updates, I am just going to get it out now.

Ella is 21 months old.  She’s a smart little girl, no doubt.  But she’s still young.  I definitely didn’t want to force potty training on her.  Truth is, changing her diaper has become second nature for me.  It is way easier to tote her around for a few hours, not worrying about if she has pee running down her leg.

But this little girl decided on her own that she was ready to use the potty.  I, however, was not prepared.  Seriously, I haven’t had time to read books on how to do this properly!  Dorky, I know, but that is just how I operate.  I didn’t have pull-ups, and I didn’t have flushable wipes.  But it didn’t matter.  One day she just said, “poo, poo potty!”  And that was that.  She refused to go in her diaper.

Peeing has been the messy part.  But in a week’s time I can safely say that she is “house broken.”  So she’ll use the potty on her own initiative, while at home.  Maybe she would when we go out, but I am terrified of taking her out diaperless.  I have made a couple 30-minute trips (max), and those have been successful.  However, I come home to find that I forgot half of my grocery list and the other half is the wrong stuff anyways.  Sheesh, this is stressful.

Then there is the amusement of mid-air poo drops- thankfully caught by my husband, not myself.  Being a witness to the act was bad enough.  Or the realization of her needing to pee by going just the tiniest bit in her undies, only to realize that she needs to jump up and use the potty.  So just for that we go though 5 pairs of undies a day.

I know I will be happy when it is all done and she is totally, 100% potty trained.  I will be thankful to only have one in diapers at a time.  But it is serious craziness to have a little pink potty sitting in your living room all day… and then having to clean that little pink potty about 15-20 times a day.  I am exhausted.

A friend of mine sent me a link to this article after one of my potty training posts.  Little did I know that it would become my reality.  Yep, definitely going shopping for a foldable potty seat this weekend.  Awesome.
